Introduction of Tinplate

Tinplate (SPTE)

Tinplate (Chinese Pinyin: ma kou tie),or SPTE in English terminology,is a kind of cold-rolled,low-carbon thin steel plate or steel tape electroplated with pure tin for commercial use. Tin is corrosion and rust-proof. Tinplate thus combines the strength and formability of steel and the corrosion resistance, solderability and pleasing appearance of tin to offer a new material that is resistant to corrosion, non-toxic, highly strong and ductile.

Tinplate is a kind of steel plate with tin-coating, which gives it strong resistance to rust. An old and popular Chinese term for it is “馬口鐵” (ma kou tie), which bears similarity in pronunciation with that of Macao. People believe that the first tinplate for manufacturing food cans was imported from Macao, hence it was named “Macao tie (steel)”. Another theory of the name has something to do with the traditional Chinese kerosene lamp, whose cap, made of tinplate, looks like horse mouth, which is literally what “馬口” means in Chinese.

Tinplate: Minimum Pollution, Easily-Recyclable and Resource-Saving

Presently there are iron & steel containers, aluminum containers, paper and plastic containers, each with different disposing and recycling schemes. It is generally agreed that steel containers have the best recyclability. In the global context of environmental protection and management, tinplate cans with minimum pollution, resource-saving and easily recyclable, are obviously a best choice in the future packaging industry.

1.Minimum Pollution.
Tinplate, the main material for cans, is environmental friendly and naturally decomposable. A tinplate can, exposed in nature, would return to original ferric oxide. Time will consume the used cans, leaving no residue to pollute the environment. Trees are also safe in the development of tinplate business and nature keeps its balance.

2.Easily Recyclable:
Tinplate cans are unique in that they are attracted to magnet, so they are easily separated from other disposables. This leads to up to 80% recycling of cans. Environmentally-friendly caps made them safer, cleaner and reduces the amount of trash produced, substantially and directly benefiting the recycling process.

Shedding equipment has been invented to effectively remove over 98% of the polluting residue on steel cans and leaving fine scrap iron. Researches in U.S. have indicated that aluminum easy-open ends are good for reusing iron since they reduce the amount of hot metal in steelmaking, thus cut down the total cost. In terms of energy-saving, reports have shown that steelmaking with tinplate scraps compared to that at a iron mine saves up to 230 m3 natural gas per ton. It is obvious that recycling and reusing the tinplate cans are beneficial to the environment and reservation of resources globally. The future of tinplate is wide open.
